GN Cyclecar Project.
Tim Gunn
NOW SOLD. A great project for someone wanting to build a GN. The mortal remains were found on a farm in the late 70's after the farmer wrote to Micheal Ware who at the time was the curator of the national motor museum at Beaulieu. The farmer offered the remains of a rolling chassis to the museum after he had decided it had served its purpose as a mobile chicken coup and was no longer required. Beaulieu then wrote to the VSCC where it found a new home with one of its members. The farmer used to move the GN 'chicken coup' to different parts of the field to give the chickens a different view. A lovely collection of letters from the farmer to Beaulieu and then to VSCC and the owner prior to me are with the project. The original chassis was a late shaft drive GN and was deemed to be to far gone, but is apparently saved in the Frazer Nash Archive. ( I have some photographic slides of when it was originally found). The front axle, spring mounts and various castings and essential parts were saved and these were fitted to the chassis it has now. The engine is made by CIME. A French maker of propriety engines and has been rebuilt. 1100cc overhead valve 4 cylinder. Rather amusingly stands for: ' La Compagnie Industrielle des Moteurs a Explosion'. This is mated to a standard GN clutch and then to the GN bevel box and the standard GN chain drive transmission. Original GN rear sprockets are with the project along with an original steering box and steering wheel, scuttle brass fuel tank, various hard to find instruments and gauges, original GN hub caps and a box full of other original and newly made GN parts and spares. Being a water cooled engine, it has a new specifically made radiator with the later pattern GN aluminium front grill. There are no reg documents, however there is a useful and rare tax disc for a GN Cyclecar in its brass holder and a GN Cyclecar chassis / body plate. brake drums and shoes, castings, rear axle parts. All these parts have been meticulously sourced over many years by the previous owner and by me.
Fairly recent Longstone 350 x 19 tyres are fitted to the wheels and are unused.
A file is with the project which includes all of the letters from the original farmer, Beaulieu and Peter Hull of the VSCC, along with the photo slides of when the mortal remains were found and receipts for parts and the works to the CIME engine. There is also a set of plans and instructions to build a GN body and copy of an original GN spares brochure.
Further engineering is required, but the majority of the hard work is done. A great opportunity to finish building a sporting GN road car with an interesting engine. Lots of spares go with it which might be useful.
I've tried to photograph everything. The car is located in Essex, UK where tea, chocolate biscuits and haggling happens. Get in touch for further photos, questions or you would like to come and see it. NOW SOLD.
